Western Kangaroo Island
Remote offshore islands, rugged exposed cliffs and headlands provide a spectacular backdrop for the Western Kangaroo Island Marine Park.
Situated between Cape Forbin and Sanderson Bay, the park’s open waters act as pathways for whales, dolphins and southern blue fin tuna on their migration route. Away from the full fury of the sea are estuaries, secluded pocket beaches, intertidal shore platforms, deep-water reefs and sandy seafloor habitats where rock lobsters, sponges, soft corals and sea stars live.
There are plenty of things to do in the park, from diving down to explore the many vessels that came to grief in the hazardous waters dating back to 1836, to joining a fishing charter that operate in the area.
The park is also the perfect place to observe wildlife, particularly the Australian fur seal breeding colony at North Casuarina Islet and the colony of long-nosed fur seals at Cape du Couedic. Bird watchers should watch out for the white-bellied sea eagle and osprey foraging grounds. On land, be sure to visit Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, which have been shaped by the raging wind and water.
Access to Western Kangaroo Island Marine Park is from Flinders Chase National Park, Cape Du Couedic, Cape Borda and Harvey's Return.
